is currently governed by a board of directors composed of members of the SSM Ministries of Health and designated lay people. In 2002, SSM Health became the first healthcare organization in the country to receive the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the country's highest quality award. Centene was founded by Elizabeth Brinn as Managed Health Services in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1984.The rich history of SSM Health began with five German nuns who left their homeland in search of religious freedom and to do the work of God.

This journey led them to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, where Father Caspar Rehrl founded the CSA ministry in 1858. Under the leadership of Mother Mary Agnes, the community's first canonical superior, the CSA began its health ministry. This was the start of a long and successful journey for SSM Health.In 1894, Sister Mary Augustine Giesen and six other sisters left the congregation and traveled to Maryville, Missouri, where they formed an independent religious congregation, the Sisters of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, Mid-Missouri, Oklahoma and south-central Wisconsin. This marked a new chapter in SSM Health's history as it began to expand its reach across multiple states.In 1986, SSM Health was created as a system of hospitals, nursing homes and health-related businesses.

This marked a major milestone for the organization as it began to grow into one of the largest healthcare systems in the United States. Since then SSM Health has grown to include 23 hospitals across four states: Missouri, Illinois, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.In 2002, SSM Health became the first healthcare organization in the country to receive the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the country's highest quality award. This award recognized SSM Health's commitment to providing exceptional health care services and revealed God's healing.Since then SSM Health has continued to expand its reach and provide quality health care services to its patients. It has also received numerous awards for its commitment to providing quality health care services including the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award which it won in 2002.Today SSM Health continues to provide exceptional health care services to its patients while also providing financial assistance to those who cannot afford it through its Bethesda Health Group Foundation.

The health group in St. Louis, Missouri has been providing exceptional health care services since 1858 when Father Caspar Rehrl founded it as part of the CSA ministry.
